The festival has a long history and is said to have originated from the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. According to legend, Qu Yuan was a loyal minister of the kingdom of Chu during the Warring States period. He was falsely accused of treason and exiled. In despair, he drowned himself in a river. The local people, who admired him, searched for his body in boats shaped like dragons. They also threw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river to distract the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body.
This tradition has been passed down through the centuries, and to this day, people still celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival by racing dragon boats and eating rice dumplings.
