The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on March 27 that it has officially launched a new platform called the Coronavirus Network (CoViNet). The platform aims to bring together global expertise and capabilities for earlier and more accurate detection, monitoring and evaluation of coronaviruses such as the novel coronavirus (COV), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-COV), and possible new coronaviruses in the future.

The Coronavirus Network brings together laboratories with deep expertise in human, animal, and environmental coronavirus surveillance around the world, and now covers 36 laboratories in 21 countries in six regions.

Laboratory representatives also met in Geneva on 26-27 March to agree on an action plan for 2024-2025 to assist WHO member States in achieving more efficient early detection, risk assessment, and response to coronavirus-related health challenges.

In response, Maria van Kerkerkhove, acting director of WHO's Department of Epidemiology and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention, stressed in the press release: "This new global network for coronavirus will ensure that we can promptly detect, monitor and assess those coronavirus that pose a major threat to public health, thereby safeguarding global health security."
