International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.
The origins of International Women's Day date back to the early 1900s, where it grew out of the labor movements in North America and Europe. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and the right to vote. In 1909, the Socialist Party of America designated the last Sunday in February as National Women's Day.
International Women's Day was first celebrated by the United Nations on March 8, 1975. Since then, it has become an official holiday in many countries and is now recognized as a day for women's rights and equality.
